AICRI, Cancer Trials Ireland, and Irish Society for Medical Oncology Host Inaugural Ireland-US Cancer Collaboration Event ASCO 2024

Together with Cancer Trials Ireland (CTI) and the Irish Society for Medical Oncology (ISMO), AICRI co-hosted a highly successful educational and networking event focused on Ireland-US and all-island collaboration in Chicago during the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) 2024 Conference. The event was also kindly facilitated by AstraZeneca.

Over 25 attendees, including oncologists practicing on the island of Ireland and the US, along with other cancer researchers, clinical trials specialists and industry leaders, participated in an engaging discussion on how best to support cross-border opportunities going forward. Key examples of successful all-island and Ireland-US partnerships were given, including the Ireland – Northern Ireland – US National Cancer Institute Cancer Consortium and significant projects funded under the HEA North-South Research Programme and the US-Ireland R&D programme.

Additional presentations on what the future may hold for the Electronic Health Record ecosystem and the practical use of AI in early diagnosis added greatly to the programme.

There was an immersive discussion on how best to work together and benefit from opportunities that present themselves in cancer research and care, along with education and training.

Attendees included Prof. Seamus O’Reilly, Clinical Lead, CTI, Prof. Michaela Higgins, President, ISMO, Prof. William Gallagher, Full Professor of Cancer Biology at UCD and Co-Lead, AICRI, Prof. Mark Lawler, Professor of Digital Health at QUB and Co-Lead, AICRI, Prof. Roisin Connolly, Professor Gerald O'Sullivan Chair in Cancer Research at UCC and CUH, Prof. Janice Walshe, Consultant Medical Oncologist at St. Vincent’s University Hospital, Dr Peter O’ Dwyer, Group Co-Chair of the ECOG-ACRIN Cancer Research Group (ECOG-ACRIN), Dr Roisin O' Cearbhaill, Gynaecologic Oncologist & Cellular Therapist, and Prof. Patrick Forde, Professor and Co-Director, Division of Upper Aerodigestive Malignancies, Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins University, amongst many other leaders in oncology.

This inaugural AICRI-CTI-ISMO networking event provided a great success and a template for future events.
