The European-American Forum on Cancer Welcome Reception took place on April 24th at The Mansion House.

Prof Mark Lawler, Co-Lead of AICRI, warmly welcomed our distinguished guests to Dublin for the inaugural European-American Forum on Cancer. He highlighted the forum's timing during the 25th Anniversary of the Ireland - Northern Ireland - US National Cancer Institute Cancer Consortium, and its coincidence with the 20th Anniversary of Ireland's Smoking Ban. This forum marked a critical juncture in cancer research, care, and policy. It brought together globally recognised clinical and academic leaders, along with key policymakers political figures, and patient advocates. Together, they developed a transatlantic strategy to combat cancer and outlined a series of recommendations to tackle the looming global cancer crisis. Additionally, the event celebrated the launch of the European Cancer Pulse Ireland, a new initiative by the European Cancer Organisation focused on identifying and addressing cancer disparities across Europe.

The welcome reception was graciously hosted by the Lord Mayor of Dublin, Daithí De Róiste.

Daithí de Róiste, the Lord Mayor of Dublin, addressed the guests to the Mansion House and emphasised the profound impact of global partnerships in combating cancer, noting the widespread influence of the disease on families across the city and country. Expressing gratitude for the significant research backing these efforts the Lord Mayor highlighted the importance of partnerships between Europe and the US. He underscored the vital role of research in supporting patients and families, acknowledging the invaluable contribution of organisations like AICRI and the partnering organisers of the event in advancing cancer research. Closing his address with the Irish proverb “Ar scáth a chéile a mhaireann na daoine” (people live in each other’s shadows), which encapsulated the spirit of collaboration and support that defines the mission of AICRI. Together, we can work together to face the challenges of cancer and provide shelter in times of need.
