Euro-American Forum on Cancer takes place in Farmleigh House, Dublin

The inaugural Joint Euro-American Forum on Cancer was held on 25th and 26th April in Farmleigh House, Dublin. The goal of this high level summit of world leading cancer experts was to explore greater cooperation between Europe and the United States in tackling cancer.

The Forum was jointly hosted by the Irish Government’s Department of Health, the AIl-Island Cancer Research Institute (AICRI) and the National Cancer Control Programme, in collaboration with world renowned cancer organisations from the US and Europe, including the European Cancer Organisation, the US National Cancer Institute, the American Society for Clinical Oncology and the European School of Oncology.

Minister for Health, Stephen Donnelly TD, launched the Joint Euro-American Forum on Cancer in Farmleigh House on 25th April. Speaking at the launch of the Forum, Minister Donnelly said:

“Today's Forum is an opportunity to celebrate achievements in North-South and Transatlantic cooperation on cancer, particularly through the North West Cancer Centre, and the Cancer Consortium which has benefitted from expert input by the United States National Cancer Institute. In Ireland, we have seen improvements in survival rates and patient outcomes due to a shared national approach which has involved the National Cancer Control Programme, cancer teams in designated hospitals, researchers and patient and volunteer organisations. This Government’s commitment to cancer has been shown through substantial investment of over €50 million into cancer treatment and screening through our National Cancer Strategy, and through €37.6 million in funding into cancer research.”

The Forum brought together globally recognised clinical, academic and patient advocate leaders and key relevant policy makers and political figures, who will shape and accelerate a transatlantic cancer beating agenda. The event represented an unrivalled opportunity for Europe and America to join forces against the common challenge – cancer - with a focus on lung cancer and cancer inequalities along with other important topics.
